Kokuen (God of Black Flame)
9.4 x 4.6 x 4.6 in
The Goshintou series are sculptures of lamps by Satoshi Nishizaki. They are inspired by “tourou” or lanterns that are placed at the front of Buddhist temples throughout Japan. The practice of placing the lanterns began by a desire to dedicate a pure light for Buddha or the deities at the temple. Kokuen – The god of the black flame was created by the Nishizaki with a prayer for the safety of family and friends. The "tourou" are said to play a role in lighting the temple paths for people walking in the dark so they do not get lost.
